Question about the mission in Saving Private Ryan

It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen but I admittedly haven’t watched it in a long time so I think my memory on certain plot details is a little hazy.

I recently saw a video on TikTok where poster was speculating what may have happened to Corporal Upham and Private Reiben (the two lone survivors of Captain Miller’s squad that was tasked to go find Private Ryan) after the events of the movie. Some people in the comments guessed that they were (or at least possibly were) KIA at some point later in the war given that the war in Europe lasted for about another year after D-Day.

These takes from the ppl in the comments confused me because I was always under the impression that if Miller’s squad found Ryan and got him home alive, that they would essentially be relieved of their duties or somehow honorably discharged and also be allowed to go home.

It’s two monologues in particular that gave me this impression (I’ll link the exact parts). Although I don’t think it’s ever explicitly said that this is the deal, I always kind of assumed that maybe it was mentioned off-screen. I suppose it would be an unusual arrangement to make with Miller and his soldiers, but their assignment in general was obviously unusual so that just made sense to me.

Let me know y’all think tho

Edit: Lol sorry if I didn’t make it clear, my question is were the surviving characters sent home after the events of the film?
