I spend most of my gaming time using emulators on PC, and while that should scratch the itch, it doesn’t quite do it. Emulators can be hit or miss — some games run beautifully, while others are a complete mess. On top of that, tracking down certain games is a pain. Most of the companies that made them don’t sell them anymore, resellers jack up the prices, and thanks to internet censorship, even finding “free” options is getting harder.
Sony and Microsoft at least make an effort to bring some sixth-gen titles to modern platforms — not all, but a fair few. I’ll give Microsoft credit: they really go the extra mile with smoother performance and visual upgrades on Xbox. Nintendo, on the other hand, will just pick a random game or two, slap an anniversary label on it, and charge a ridiculous amount.
I’ve actually gone out of my way to buy some PS2 games on PS5 — even ones I never played before — and I end up having an awesome time. The added trophies are a nice touch, too, giving me another reason to stay hooked. I just wish these companies would go all in and bring all their classics to modern consoles. There’s a whole generation of magic sitting in the vault, collecting dust.
