Republicans Can’t Cancel Medicaid Coverage of Trans Care

The Senate Parliamentarian said it violated the Byrd Rule.

Republicans are using Reconciliation to pass the Big Beautiful Bill without Dem votes but that really only works if everything is budget related. That’s the Byrd rule. And it turns out that Republicans violated that when they tried to ban Medicaid coverage of trans care.

They can still try to add it to the bill but then that would require 7 Dem votes, and that likely isn’t happening.

From what I hear, this happened because of Dems trying to fight parts of the Big Beautiful Bill behind the scenes and I think part of that is a good sign, Dems are still fighting for us.

And they aren’t abandoning trans people, at least not as a party.

That said, I’m not trying to make the pitch to praise them either.

It MATTERS that Zohran Mamdani won the New York City election. That city is illustrative of what the Democratic Party is, it’s a microcosm of the party as a whole, of the diversity of thought and the malleability of the average liberal voter. Mamdani made some strong promises to help trans people and he lost nothing for it.

He didn’t moderate and he won because of that.
