REVIEW: Stephen King’s New Dystopian Sci-Fi Remake Is A Daunting Depiction Of The Media’s Impact

Edgar Wright feels like the perfect person to adapt Stephen King’s most obscure work, especially since he’s proven to be one of the more effective genre filmmakers of the 21st century. What might come off as a disconnect between Wright and King is the comedic voice and style that only one of them seems to possess. However, The Running Man is the perfect Stephen King story for Wright to adapt with its use of satire and more thematically relevant social themes. Far from horror, King wrote one of his boldest genre stories when he wrote The Running Man in 1982. Seeing one adaptation already, the latest iteration comes to life in this thrilling new action flick.

With an all-star cast that includes modern superstar Glen Powell leading the way, The Running Man will definitely find its fan base in this 2025 holiday season. What’s probably the biggest takeaway that audiences will have watching Edgar Wright’s new film is that it is a nice balance of popcorn thrills and deeper thematic resonance. Never trying to be more than it has to be, The Running Man provides a good time at the movie theater, and will definitely force some people to look at the undeniable parallels this futuristic fiction has to real-life society. Most audiences will be able to sit back and embrace the film’s energy, tone and style, which has become synonymous with Edgar Wright over the last couple of decades.

Overall ranking for this is a 7.9/10 as it doesn’t exactly surpass Schwarzenegger’s 1987 original. It succeeds in ways all on its own, despite some of its glaring flaws…
