The trailer begins. You see executives coming out to a packed basketball arena. You hear the voice-over of Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson). “I work in the family business,” Isla said, “The greatest basketball franchises in the history of the game…”
I was like, oh sh*t, are they making a Jeanie Buss series?
“…the Los Angeles Waves.”
You then see players running a play wearing a sea blue and orange jersey. One of the players dunked. I love it. It’s a fictional basketball team. Many people would probably prefer a show about a real team like the Lakers or the Warriors. However, there are a lot of issues with that. There will be issues from the owner’s/management side and issues from the player’s side. License fees for any sports league can be expensive. A fictional team gives the production more flexibility.
“And this is the story of the f*cked up family that runs it.”
You see Cam Gordon (Justin Theroux) walking in like a badass, wearing a black wool coat with raised collars as he takes off his sunglasses.
You see Sandy Gordon (Drew Tarver) looking uptight in a suit and tie. He walked into his kitchen with a mug.
You see Ness Gordon (Scott MacArthur) wearing a suit but without a tie in front of a team board. He is all smiles as the team puts a crown on his head.
It cuts to Cam popping a champagne. The team just won a championship. It is a party and champagne showers everywhere.
It cuts to Cam driving recklessly as you hear the screeching of wheels. It then cuts to Cam in the hospital with a cast on his left shoulder and stitches on his left eyebrow. “Isla,” he said, “I’m making you the President of the Waves.”
Isla looked stunned.
It cuts to Isla walking in the practice gym as you see the court and the Waves logo behind her. BTW, I love the sea blue and orange combo. They found the color combination that is unlike any other team in the NBA.
It cuts to Isla seated on Cam’s hospital bed. “When I was a little girl,” she said, “daddy never believed in me, and I started to doubt myself — ”
“ — I need you to stop because I don’t care of any of that sh*t,” Cam responded.
Isla just nodded.
Right outside the hospital room, you hear the falsetto, excited screams of Ali Lee (Brenda Song). “You are the President of the Waves,” Ali said, “It’s shocking. On behalf of all women, don’t ever make a mistake. It looks bad for all of us.” A little light-hearted corny joke. I’ll let it go for now.
It cuts to a family board meeting with Isla, Sandy, and Ness. “We’re a family, Sis,” Ness told Isla. “We got your back, no matter what people say.”
“What are they saying?” Isla asked.
“Just that fact that you’re a nepo baby and you don’t know what your doing,” Ness said. “But you’re old, so you’re like ah, you’re like a nepo chrome.”
“Oh my God!” Isla exclaimed.
“Don’t go on Reddit unless you wanna kills yourself,” Sandy pitched in.
Team ownership is hard. When the team is not doing well, people blame the players, the coach, and the front office, which includes the owners.
It cuts to Isla with her husband, Lev Levy (Max Greenfield), at home, “You are the smartest Gordon I know,” he told her. “I know that’s not a high bar.”
A lawyer talked to the Gordon Family, “Now we’re a family brand,” the lawyer said.
It cuts to….
Isla is shirtless, covering her breasts with two basketballs.
Ness, with a thick beard, was talking at a government podium. Was he called on a Senate/Congress hearing?
Sandy is shirtless, kissing another man.
“You, Ness, and Sandy don’t represent out values,” the lawyer said.
“Yeah! Maybe there’s a couple pictures of my Dad with Saddam Hussein,” Isla told the lawyer, “but we are good people.”
Ali had a concerned look on her face.
It cuts to inside their office. Isla shot Ness and Sandy with a barrage of paintballs. One final shot hits Ness on the throat, and he choked for a bit.
“Which one of you is the leak?” Isla asked authoritatively.
“Are you CRAZY!” Sandy exclaimed.
But Isla pointed the paintball gun, ready for another round of shots.
It cuts to the Los Angeles Waves on the court. It’s cool. They have teal and orange colors, the exact color combo that has not been taken in the NBA. It’s the perfect color for a fictional NBA team.
Back at the office, “We suck!” Stephen Ramirez (Roberto Sanchez) told Isla, Sandy, and Ness. Ramirez is the Head of the Board. He is an elder statesman in the organization who has been there since the days of Jack Gordon, the late father of the siblings and former Owner/President of the Waves.
“I wanna know what you’re gonna do to stop the sucking?” he raised his voice at Isla.
“I know the record doesn’t show it,” Isla said, “but this is a winning roster.”
It cuts to a game. The Waves hit a 3-point shot. Another player hits a two-handed dunk.
“And I have a team to run,” Isla continued. “So if you’ll excuse me.” She was about to walk out of the office, but then. “Wait? This is my office. You get out!” She commanded Stephen and her two siblings.
It cuts to the Waves Cheer Squad dancing during halftime.
Back at the office. “I shouldn’t have this job,” Isla told Ali. “I should just be a crappy interior designer like all my sh*tty friends from high school.”
The pressure is real for team owners. In a 2025 interview with Mark Cuban, one of the reasons he sold majority ownership of the Mavs is that he doesn’t want the burden of ownership to be passed down to his kids.
It cuts to practice. Isla walked away. But then…SPLAT! She hits a glass wall. “It’s just, too clean,” she told the coaching staff. “Smudge em up or something.”
I don’t mind cheap jokes for this one. It is a comedy.
Back at the locker room. “Did you see Coach?” Isla asked one older coaching staff member.
He pointed him to Coach Jay Brown (Jay Ellis), who is jacked and doing pull-ups.
It cuts to the garden area at night. “It’s a leap of faith,” Coach Jay told her. “But it’s a leap of faith that you are in control of. You got this.” He then held her knees. I sense they will have a sexual tension in the show despite Isla being already married or in a serious relationship with Lev Levy.
It cuts to Isla lashing out at an intern. “Everyone is horny for everyone they work with,” she told the guy. “But you don’t do anything about it!”
Maybe the intern slept with a co-worker.
It cuts to later that night. Still in the office, Isla made a call. “You want a new point guard,” she said.
On the other end (of the line), an older man in bed responded, “You got yourself a deal.” She dropped the landline.
Ali is all smiles, celebrating the successful deal of her boss/friend. The next scene is they are now having wine at the office. Maybe they did close a big deal.
“Am I that B*TCH?” Isla asked Ali.
“Oh! You are the BIGGEST B*TCH!” Ali said. The two ladies laughed.
It cuts to a Waves player, who looks anxious, about to take a free throw.
It cuts to Isla doing a pep talk to the entire team, “We are going to give the rest of the season everything we got and make a deep playoff run,” she told them.
It cuts back to her home. She walks out. Lev Levy looks disappointed. Maybe that is the B story. As Isla goes all in for the team, her personal life is in shambles. And she has to juggle two guys.
Welcome
to the
Family Business
Quick Cuts:
Isla walked out of practice as the entire team applauded.
Isla looks serious and intense in her office.
A Waves player does a slam dunk.
At an evening party, someone punched Ness in the face. He then fell into the swimming pool.
“Respectfully,” Travis Bugg (Chet Hanks) said. He’s one of the players, “I’ve seen your t*tties on the internet. I can’t really take you seriously.”
