I was thinking of the recent cuts the show made to some cast members (Michael Longfellow, Chloe Troast, etc.) and something came to mind…what if some of these members who saw their SNL contracts terminated got together and made an Apatow-like comedy of it? I think it would be interesting. I wouldn't be looking for a slapstick thing or anything like that necessarily, but maybe they play themselves in the hypothetical movie and try to start a streaming series or maybe even, crazily enough, try to create a competing SNL-like show to get back at Michaels. (Who would play Michaels?)
Another idea I thought of was this: What is it like to either get cast on the show, become a writer on the show, or even become a cue-card employee on the show, and then, after the first few months working at the program, go home for Thanksgiving or Christmas? That must be something else…suddenly an awkward family gathering becomes an event at which you can brag. Maybe an old crush comes along and is impressed by you, and so on. And there would have to be the scene of a friend pitching you ideas for the show in an annoying manner. And if it was a writer coming home, the grandfather who got you into Harvard on legacy acceptance so you'd become a doctor or cosmologist is disappointed that you didn't follow in his footsteps and do something more serious with the Ivy League degree.
Have there ever been movies like this? I think there was one where one person from an improv troupe got into SNL and the rest of the gang are jealous, can't remember who was in that one, but there was one famous comedian. Not sure if the other two concepts were done, though. And I have to say, NBC Uni/Broadway and Michaels should produce movies like this…sort-of more serious fare that explore other aspects of the legendary show.
Any thoughts are welcome…
