Summary
Those familiar with Star Wars lore know Darth Bane was one of the most powerful and influential Sith Lords. He established the Rule of Two, the system that ultimately let Palpatine rise to power, and claimed to be the Sith’ari, the Sith equivalent of the Chosen One. But where did this dark lord come from? Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn answers that very question.
Dessel was born to an abusive father on the backwater planet of Apatros, and spent his early life working in the mines. After he accidently killed a Republic officer in self-defense, he was forced to join the Sith army to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison. There, the Dark Lords became aware of his Force sensitivity and took him to their academy on Korriban to learn the ways of the Dark Side.
Dessel takes the name Bane as a symbol of his new life and begins training in the Force and lightsaber combat. He also studies the ancient writings of Sith Lords long past and grows disgusted with the modern order. The Sith are supposed to be about the individual’s constant struggle to gain more power, but the modern Sith are more concerned with working together to fight the Jedi. Bane comes to believe that in order for the Sith to return to their former glory, the current order needs to be destroyed and rebuilt, and he’s just the Dark Lord to do it.
