Unfortunately, even though The Outer Worlds 2 is technically better than the first, it’s not much of a step up. It still lags behind Obsidian’s older games in terms of storytelling, character writing, and quest design. The world just doesn’t have that spark, it feels like a prettier (but not that pretty) version of what we already got. I think I liked what they did with Avowed better.
The gameplay is definitely smoother, and I can’t deny it’s a solid classic-style RPG where you can build your character and approach quests however you want. There’s a certain charm to the setting and tone, and when it clicks, it does remind me why Obsidian is still respected in the RPG space.
But overall, it feels very formulaic. The factions, the choices, the open ended perks and weaknesses,it all funnels toward the same kinds of outcomes, and it never really surprises you. The humor still feels forced, and the story doesn’t grab you the way it should.
In a year full of great RPGs, I just can’t justify spending or money on something that feels this familiar. It’s not bad just uninspired. But I already have Gamepass and no other game on my list at the moment which is why I am still trying to find the spark.
I think the critics score is a bit high tbh, I would give it a solid 7.
TL;DR: The Outer Worlds 2 is a competent sequel that plays well but plays it too safe. Better than the first, sure, but still missing that special spark that made Obsidian’s older games memorable.
Edit: After doing almost everything and finishing the main quest in the first map, I decided to let this one go. Got boring quickly.
