By skyforbes I was slapping together a new rig this summer and was posting here often to ask questions. I planned 32 Gb of RAM, but one guy told me "get 64, I know it may seem like an overkill now, but trust me, and DDR5 works better with 2 sticks instead of 4". Well I was already over my initial budget, so I was reluctant to dish out extra 100$ for extra 32 Gb. Yet, I did.
I paid for those two sticks 220$.
Today, they cost 1250$.
Buddy, wherever you are now, may your core temps be low, your thermal paste always spread evenly like butter on a pancake, and your GPU connectors unmeltable.
Edit: dang this blew up. I see a lot of similar and repeating questions in the comments, so I'll try to broadly answer them here.
Why did I decide to take those 64 Gb? One, to future-proof; in my last PC I started out with 8 (4+4), and had to add another 8 later, and that made it hella unstable, even though it was the same model and all. For this PC, I decided I don't want to deal with this crap again throughout its lifetime. And two, so that I can finally stop worrying about memory when running heavy programs and numerous VMs at the same time, for instance when practicing in a virtual security home lab.
And nope, I do not plan on selling any of the RAM – I'm just very happy I managed to dodge the bullet and can finally peacefully enjoy a quality machine for years to come.
