Hello!
Just a son-in-law trying to help his FIL get Medicaid.
Background:
Father in law (73YO) suffered 2 strokes back to back that left him bed ridden. He has always received (as long as I known him) SSI(1.4k/m). His wife(MIL) is the primary caretaker. She is retired but still works 4 days/month(2.3k/m). She takes care of everything from bills to logistics for their household. Wife and I are afraid that she is suffering from caretaker fatigue(we offered to move both of them in our house, we prefer them to but she didnt want to). She applied to medicaid to see if she can get someone to come out once a day to help out with her husband. But she was denied
The denial was
"You are receiving this notice because the Virginia Medicaid has determined that one or more members of your household does not qualify for Medicaid or Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) based on information that could include your household income and family size."
I was under the impression that her income was at least somewhat protected so she doesn't go broke. Is there anything that can be done? or is she SOL? Is it because she makes too much? too much in their checking/saving account(I think she told me they have like 20k)?
TIA!
