Wall Street Journal – It Will Soon Be Curtains for the Movie Theater

Reading this article made me reflect on what the future of moviegoing may be. Specifically, this Wall Street Journal article that suggests that the movie theatre as we know it (i.e. multiplexes) will follow a similar trajectory to Blockbuster in the next decade.

While I do feel that this is hyperbole, I do wonder how gen alpha (currently entering their teenage years) younger gen Z will transform the theatrical exhibition business. Aside from the exception of films shown in premium format screenings (ex. IMAX), they have been acclimated to watching new releases on streaming/TV given shortened theatrical windows (which they find equivalent to a regular theatrical viewing experience). Of course, the growth in repertory screenings (among independent cinemas and more recently among cinema chains) has been successful in attracting young adult moviegoers.

Will movie theatres be something solely reserved for big cities/large metropolitan areas (akin to live theatre venues)? Will there be a move back to smaller, more curated programming in cinemas to cut down on rental costs while also maintaining a dedicated customer base that returns?
