"Showgirls" got some of the worst reviews possible. But Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" got awful reviews on initial release, the critics misunderstood the film, but over time it became a cult classic. Verhoeven hasn't made a 'bad' movie in my opinion, and I loved Starship Troopers, Robocop, Total Recall, etc, so I am willing to give him some slack here. I don't remember hating this movie, but I don't remember it being that great.
Thinking on this, I can't imagine Verhoeven would consciously make a bad or stupid movie… so what gives? Was "Showgirls" misunderstood?
