These guys are the flip-side of the authenticity coin. I’m not sure they have even stepped foot in Mexico. Look at that insipid taco above. Our review of this was: “Very underwhelming and seriously disappointing”.
At Guzman y Gomez don’t expect the authenticity of a proper Mexican cantina, you’ll get food fast — fast-food burrito bowls, akin to McRonald with a Spanish accent. Some reviewers say the taste “is okay” and the service “quick and easy.” But here’s the downer, folks: you’re being charged Singapore rates for a “Mexican food” concept, that has done no more than call its food Mexican and slap “fresh” on your marketing. One Reddit, one diner summed it up bluntly:
“They aren’t really Mexican food they’re more Tex-Mex. It’s serviceable, but it doesn’t press the tortillas, slow-roast the meat or make the salsa sting properly.”
Having loud signage, the occasional mention of Ariba and Fiesta, and central-kitchen tacos doesn’t make you authentic. Flavour, ingredients, and soul does. But Guzman y Gomez does have scale, visibility and consistency — just like the Clown does.
