The film industry is full of pretentious talk about an auteur, someone who has an outstanding vision, who is a revolutionary figure, whose contribution is impossible to underestimate. Think, of course, Tarkovsky or Kurosawa, or Bergman, Godard, Visconti and many others. Their works are complex, layered and are usually seen as exceptionally deep. However, there are plenty of people who are not geniuses, yet they are solid creators and can produce decent movies. When I say that I'm talking about someone positively mediocre, I don't think Michael Bay (I think his films suck), but someone like Clint Eastwood. If we draw parallels with literature, on the one hand, you get delicate and tasteful Oscar Wilde, and on the other, you have Peter Benchley with his Jaws. The latter is an excellent book; I love it for its simplicity and perfect action-driven nature. However, his work is definitely not a literary classic.
So, what directors do you see as just solid and mediocre in a good way?
