Heaven's Gate is regarded as one of the most epic disasters in the history of cinema. It tanked a studio and the career of a young director who was seen as a genius and a revolutionary artist after his Deerhunter. I'm not a massive fan of this movie, but I clearly see why it is so cherished. And yet, an epic artistic picture about the Wild West with a bitter ending and a dramatic sequence of events becomes an absolute disaster. Was it the director's ego? His insecurities and ambition? Lack of supervision on behalf of a studio? Complete chaos in the scenario department, or what?
