I personally feel like it's one big art piece. Like it's a romantic cautionary tale of what can happen when you focus and chasing an unfulfilling/empty dream caused by never paying attention to right now. Like the director believes this type of romance is like a never ending want for more. A warning against the inherent narcissistic control shown by both characters. I believe the Movie director shows this with the overly coloured/bright/idealized/romantic/perfect and rose tinted style to portray the MC's Perception of the world.
I think the show is intentionally a big nothing burger. It's nostalgia ice cream with rose tinted cherries on top which hid their consequences relating to their selves and the others surrounding them.
Then turn all the dazzling lights so bright, by the end of the movie you forget the real doubts and distrust that formed and broke their relationship. That leads to the unlearned lesson of Mia's (Emma Watson) at the movies end.
The two romantic character's ignored the disappointing real world and the imperfections between themselves. Trying to live with an imperfect person while you're imagining an illusion of perfection a poor foundation for their love which led to their relationship breaking and them splitting.
NGL I wrote more then I wanted to. I just wanted to know what your thoughts where, but I HAD to have a minimum of 300 characters. Sorry for the essay ^^;
