1) I prefer watching shows in their original languages with English subtitles.
2) This opened up a huge amount of global content for me.
3) So I use ratings to filter and genre to prioritise what to watch, and still have loads of quality content in my backlog.
I watch movies/TV shows irrespective of their origin, especially in their original language with subtitles… because I've felt watching contents in it's original language is what makes me feel the reality of the show's environment. This is especially true when the characters in the show speak different languages and it would make less sense to dub them into one preferred language. This is well appreciated in the show '1899' where characters speak multiple languages.
Also, dubbing can reduce the audio quality, take away puns (which can be understood if we listen to the words and put some efforts with AI language models), compromise the originally intended emotions and meanings, make accents neutral, take away our exposure to other languages and make it difficult to feel the culture behind the language.
I first felt this when I was watching Money Heist in English. In a scene set on the ocean, Berlin talks to an English guy. I think both were talking in English(dubbed) but something felt off. That's when I switched the show to Spanish and felt the originality that it was meant to be: a Spanish guy talking to an English guy.
Since then, I've watched shows in 18 langauges:
Tamil, English, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, German, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Norwegian, Swedish, Italian, Dutch, French and Yucatec Maya (The Apocalypto language which I added to my list for completion). An Arabic movie (Capharnaum) is also on my watchlist waiting to add Arabic to that list.
With the language barrier gone thanks to English subtitles, which are available for all langauges, I've felt that the only thing stopping me from watching any content is the volume of available content
So I resorted to selecting movies which are rated 7.5 and above (IMDB) except when it comes to favourite franchises where I watch all movies to complete the story. Furthermore, I use genres to prioritise contents and still have a ton of shows always waiting to be watched.
TL;DR:
1) I prefer watching shows in their original languages with English subtitles.
2) This opened up a huge amount of global content for me.
3) So I use ratings to filter and genre to prioritise what to watch, and still have loads of quality content in my backlog.
