When it comes to movies featuring high school students, where did the depiction of them as being so unlikeable come from?

When it comes to movies in high school, or indeed any show with depictions of high school at any point, it seems as though it is an essential element to have downright awful, wretched, irredeemable kids in it. Those who are popular are depicted as being popular solely because other students are afraid of them or being hostile and severely manipulative. And of course the more athletic and better at sports they are the more intolerable they become. Did that really match the experiences of the writers and directors making these movies or is it just some dark fantasy they have?
