Kick-Ass 2 – I pretend this movie doesn’t exist. I went in with high hopes after loving the first one, but man… it just didn’t hit as hard as the first one did. The original Kick-Ass was directed by Matthew Vaughn (the guy behind the Kingsman movies, which I love), giving it great style and dark humor. The sequel had a different director, and you can really feel the change in tone. Evan Peters wasn’t playing Todd (though I get why), and the Hit-Girl/Dave scenes are awkward (the age gap 😭, but hey, there are worse ones). Honestly, it just fell a bit flat compared to the first movie, though the motherfucker was still funny asf.
I did enjoy Jim Carrey’s random but hilarious performance, and seeing the other superheroes pop up was kind of interesting too.
Joker 2 – The first movie already had a perfect ending. I thought the sequel was middle-of-the-road. Expanding the story into a musical with Lady Gaga and diving into Arthur’s past and relationships felt a bit unnecessary, since a lot of that was already shown in the first movie. Todd Phillips has made solid movies like The Hangover and War Dogs, so while the sequel wasn’t bad, it didn’t feel as strong as the original.
There are a couple more sequels I could think of, but these were the first ones that popped into my head.”
What other sequels do you think weren’t really needed?
