In 1986 Sega released an arcade game called OutRun that essentially created a genre of gaming and a genre of music. Those of us with grey beards were there, and we remember. It had a steering wheel, pedals and a seat that moved back and forth with hydraulics – highly advanced at the time. The Testarossa in the game had "real" driving physics with horsepower and tire grip mechanics and even a rudimentary AI for drifting. It featured a radio that played "Synthwave" music. It's a legendary game and nearly the entirety of modern racing games are standing, to some extent, on its extremely broad shoulders. Need For Speed, Burnout, Gran Turismo all have some element of OutRun in their veins.
And now, almost 40 years later, Rockstar Games is releasing Grand Theft Auto 6. The first one was heavily influenced by OutRun including similar driving physics and a radio that became iconic to the series.
Perhaps it's a bit of a r/ShowerThroughts post, but it's unfathomable to me how far the technology has come since I was a kid. To be alive for both OutRun and GTA6 is insane. We couldn't have imagined then what gaming would become and what we would be capable of technologically.
It makes me wonder what gaming will look like 40 years from today and whether I'll still somehow be alive to see it.
