Corporations that offer health insurance to their employees benefit from such a rule, as Medicaid takes over medical costs, or they are discouraged from offering insurance at all as far as possible.
It’s incredible people think mandating work to get health coverage is a great idea. The main people using the program are the sick and poor, many of whom couldn’t work if they wanted to. It’s a bit cynical to ask them to work to continue receiving healthcare if they can’t. Republicans’ failure to act in Congress on healthcare means the decision on Medicaid is left largely to states. Here Republicans push for a Medicaid work requirement that will affect all Medicaid recipients.
The sick are supposed to take work off anyways, right? It’s nonsensical to peg whether or not a person receives the healthcare they need on their interview skills and resume, not to mention their health. Work requirements for Medicaid is just a way to shrink Medicaid under the guise of some principle (that you only deserve healthcare if you work? An embarrassing principle at best). I don’t understand why so many support such an idea, but really, even if you do, fewer still support corporate welfare that such a law would endows to corporations. Why would Republicans want to incentivize corporations to let employees use Medicaid rather than give them insurance anyways? None of it makes sense, which is why is all reeks to begin with. It just has to be recognized as the Medicaid-shrinkage package that is, one which gives the savings to corporations to boot.
